Remembering the Battle of Sidi Rezegh

The Battle of Sidi Rezegh was a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in the North African campaign of the Second World War. This site is dedicated to preserving the history of the battle and the stories of the men who fought in it, highlighting both their courage and sacrifice and the impact of this historic battle. Explore the resources and accounts of the battle, see detailed photos of the terrain over which the battle was fought, and acknowledge the price paid by the men who did not return.

Peter Cox has twice visited the Sidi Rezegh battlefield, to retrace the war journey of his father, Brian Cox, who fought with New Zealand’s 27 (Machine Gun) Battalion.

This site also highlights the career of New Zealand-born journalist Douglas Brass. His major 1941 column, ‘These are the New Zealanders’, profiled, for readers of the Melbourne Herald, the Kiwi soldiers fighting in Libya. He then became an acclaimed and internationally published war correspondent and had a distinguished post-war career as a journalist and newspaper executive.

The Books

Desert War – The Battle of Sidi Rezegh is the result of two visits by Peter Cox and his wife, Robin, to the battlefield near Tobruk, Libya. His first book, Good Luck to All the Lads, tells the story of his father, Brian Cox, and his platoon, who fought in the battle as part of Operation Crusader. Inspired by veterans' stories and a return visit to Sidi Rezegh, Peter wrote Desert War to provide a more complete account of the battle.

His latest book, Tunis is Mad Tonight, explores the life of New Zealand war correspondent Douglas Brass, offering a unique perspective on World War II through the eyes of a frontline journalist.
